{"id":42245,"date":"2016-10-21T09:18:40","date_gmt":"2016-10-21T17:18:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/adespresso.com\/?p=42245"},"modified":"2017-10-24T12:06:28","modified_gmt":"2017-10-24T20:06:28","slug":"facebook-landing-pages-vs-facebook-lead-ads-which-is-better","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adespresso.com\/blog\/facebook-landing-pages-vs-facebook-lead-ads-which-is-better\/","title":{"rendered":"Landing Pages vs Lead Ads: The $2,000 Facebook Experiment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"\/?p=49383\">Facebook Lead Ads<\/a> are so simple.\u00a0When the ad appears on your\u00a0feed, you fill in your\u00a0contact information <em>without ever leaving Facebook.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In contrast, with Landing Pages, you have to go to a <em>separate<\/em> website where\u00a0load times, intimidating forms, and distractions potentially take you off course from providing your contact info.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/?p=42245\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-42256 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/adespresso.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/university-experiment.jpg\" alt=\"Landing Pages vs Facebook Lead Ads - Illustration\" width=\"1200\" height=\"628\" srcset=\"https:\/\/adespresso.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/university-experiment.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/adespresso.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/university-experiment-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/adespresso.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/university-experiment-1024x536.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thus, I hastily made a conclusion when setting up our company&#8217;s re-targeting campaigns: Lead Ads were the best type of ad to run!<\/p>\n<p>I enthusiastically told my boss, our CEO. His face was expressionless. He disagreed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We don&#8217;t know that.\u00a0Here&#8217;s\u00a02,000 dollars. Run an experiment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h1>The Experiment Set Up<\/h1>\n<p>While we&#8217;ve been quiet about it at AdEspresso, our experiments happen\u00a0in a\u00a0special place called the <a href=\"https:\/\/university.adespresso.com\/?utm_source=academy&amp;utm_campaign=landing_page_lead_ads&amp;utm_medium=blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AdEspresso\u00a0University.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0University is a\u00a0members-only space &#8211;\u00a0filled with video courses, webinars,\u00a0and a private Facebook community &#8211; but feel free to check it out\u00a0<em>after<\/em> you\u00a0see what I\u00a0did with\u00a0my\u00a0boss&#8217; money \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p>For this experiment,\u00a0I created\u00a0two \u201cevergreen\u201d Facebook Ad campaigns targeting our website visitors.<\/p>\n<p>The mission of the campaigns was to get a website visitor (warm traffic audience) to download one of our eBooks (provide their email address so we could then offer them more eBooks, and eventually\u00a0a Free Trial of AdEspresso).<\/p>\n<p>If the user didn\u2019t re-visit our website <em>or<\/em> download an eBook after being shown a series of eBook ads after18 days, they would be\u00a0excluded from seeing any more ads.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Campaign Set Up:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first campaign to run was the Landing Pages campaign. A\u00a0few days after it finished, I ran the Lead Ads campaign.<\/p>\n<p>The campaign was based on<em> timeframes<\/em>\u00a0of website custom audiences. I also excluded anyone\u00a0that had downloaded an eBook before, had a Free Trial before, or were\/had been a Customer.<\/p>\n<p>We wanted to attract <em>new<\/em> leads only.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The only difference between the campaigns was that one went\u00a0to a landing page to fill out a\u00a0form to get the eBook, and the other allowed the user to fill out their information in a form without leaving Facebook via a Lead Ad.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Budget:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Daily budget of 60 dollars per day, with a total spending cap of 1000 dollars per campaign. WCA stands for \u201cWebsite Custom Audience.\u201d As soon as someone visits the site, they would enter the campaign(except for the <em>excluded audiences<\/em> previously mentioned), and begin seeing an ad for an eBook \u2013 \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/ebooks.adespresso.com\/facebook-ads-dos-donts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Do\u2019s and Dont\u2019s of Facebook Ads.<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n<ul class=\"list-custom\">\n<li><strong>Day 0 (initial visit) \u2013 Day 3<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>since website visit<\/strong>: Dos and Don\u2019t eBook<\/li>\n<li><strong>Day 3 \u2013 Day 5\u00a0<strong>since website visit<\/strong><\/strong>\u00a0: 500+ Facebook Ads eBook<\/li>\n<li><strong>Day 5 \u2013 Day 7\u00a0<strong>since website visit<\/strong><\/strong>\u00a0: 137 Instagram Ad Examples eBook<\/li>\n<li><strong>Day 7\u00a0\u2013 Day 10<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>since website visit<\/strong>:\u00a0500+ Twitter Ads\u00a0eBook<\/li>\n<li><strong>Day 10\u00a0\u2013 Day 12\u00a0<strong>since website visit<\/strong><\/strong>\u00a0:\u00a0Social Proof Marketing eBook<\/li>\n<li><strong>Day 12 \u2013 Day 15\u00a0<strong>since website visit<\/strong>:<\/strong> Facebook Custom Audiences eBook<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As you can see, each ad lasted about 2-3 days.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I also set it up so that if the user clicked on the ad, they would no longer see that particular ad anymore,<em> even if they re-visited the website<\/em> (I\u2019ll explain how I did this later).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And of course, once the\u00a0user downloaded an eBook, or if they started a Free Trial without downloading an eBook, they would exit the campaign and not see any more\u00a0eBook ads at all.<\/p>\n<p><em>Placements:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For <strong>Landing Pages<\/strong>, the ads would appear on Desktop, Mobile, and Right-Column.<\/li>\n<li>For <strong>Lead Ads<\/strong>, the ads would appear on Desktop and Mobile.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Excluded Audiences:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"list-custom\">\n<li>Those that downloaded an eBook before, or during, the campaign<\/li>\n<li>Previous and current\u00a0customers<\/li>\n<li>Any website custom audience that wasn\u2019t in the ad set\u2019s timeframe (over 15 days since their last visit)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Also, as mentioned earlier, if\u00a0someone clicked on an ad\u00a0to go the Landing Page\u00a0<em>or<\/em> start the\u00a0Lead Ad submission process, they were then excluded from seeing that <em>specific<\/em>\u00a0ad anymore.<\/p>\n<p>For example:\u00a0If someone clicked on the ad for the Do\u2019s and Don\u2019ts eBook,\u00a0but\u00a0didn\u2019t give us their email for that eBook, they would be excluded from seeing that specific ad for the &#8220;Do&#8217;s and Dont&#8217;s&#8221; eBook.\u00a0<em>However<\/em>, they wouldn\u2019t exit the campaign itself. So a conversion rate of 67%. Nice!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Overall Lead Ad\u00a0results:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-bordered img-bordered-2 aligncenter wp-image-42255 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/adespresso.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Lead-Ads.png\" alt=\"lead ads vs landing pages\" width=\"1079\" height=\"52\" srcset=\"https:\/\/adespresso.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Lead-Ads.png 1079w, https:\/\/adespresso.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Lead-Ads-300x14.png 300w, https:\/\/adespresso.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Lead-Ads-1024x49.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1079px) 100vw, 1079px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>So who won?<\/h2>\n<p>Technically, from a cost-per-lead perspective,<em>\u00a0Landing Pages<\/em>. But\u00a0just\u00a0barely! You can hardly call it a &#8220;winner.&#8221; It\u00a0had a slightly lower cost per lead at 93 cents (.93 USD), while Lead Ads had a slightly higher cost per lead at .95 (95 cents). It <em>is<\/em> worth noting\u00a0though, the Lead Ads <em>cost-per-lead<\/em> dramatically spiked after 7 days relative to how the Landing Pages <em>cost-per-lead<\/em> performed in the same time-frame.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>However<\/em><\/strong>, Lead Ads performed <em>better<\/em> than the Landing Pages on mobile placements, while Landing Pages performed better than Lead Ads on Desktop.<\/p>\n<p>This brings us to the key takeaway\u00a0in this experiment:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>When\u00a0re-targeting website visitors, Lead Ads are more likely to win on\u00a0mobile, while Landing Pages are more likely to win on\u00a0Desktop.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Landing Pages <em>might<\/em>\u00a0also have a further edge since it\u00a0took <em>more effort<\/em> to fill out the form to get the eBook.\u00a0So they <em>might\u00a0<\/em>be higher qualified leads. Nonetheless, <em>everyone who saw the ads already knew AdEspresso<\/em> (website visitors), so in a sense, all were pre-qualified.<\/p>\n<p>For cold traffic campaigns, there&#8217;s a hypothesis floating around that\u00a0Landing Pages blow the socks off of Lead Ads, since Lead Ads only required a \u201cname\u201d and \u201cemail&#8221; (very little commitment). I&#8217;ve seen this happen in previous campaigns I&#8217;ve created, and that&#8217;s why I\u00a0didn&#8217;t test it in this experiment.<\/p>\n<p>Right now, based on the results of this experiment, I&#8217;m adapting our\u00a0Lead Ad campaigns to run on Mobile-only, and Landing Page campaigns to run on Desktop-only. Stay tuned for an update at some point in the future as\u00a0to how this turns out along with\u00a0the<em> quality<\/em> of these leads.<\/p>\n<p>As mentioned, with\u00a0Lead Ad Engagement Custom Audiences, I can also re-target those who engaged with the Lead Ads Forms, but didn\u2019t submit their contact info (approximately 33% of people). In the same fashion,\u00a0I can re-target those who visited a Landing Page during the campaign, but didn\u2019t submit (approximately 50% of the people). Gotta love re-targeting!<\/p>\n<h2>Other insights:<\/h2>\n<p>In both campaigns, the Social Proof Marketing eBook performed very poorly as a lead magnet. The Twitter Ads eBook also performed poorly \u2013 with a cost of 4.11 USD per lead in the the Lead Ads campaign. I am going to\u00a0replace these with different eBook offers to see if I can have a better fit for our audience.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, in <em>both<\/em> campaigns, the <a href=\"\/?p=1556\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">frequency<\/a> of\u00a0the later ad sets went over 5 (on average, the user saw the ad 5 times or more <em>per ad set<\/em>). This means that, by the end of 15 days, some users may have seen AdEspresso eBook ads for upwards of 25 times &#8211; offering an\u00a0explanation to the higher cost per leads as the campaign went on. For future ads, I would\u00a0<em>lower\u00a0<\/em>the budgets for the ad sets later in the campaign.<\/p>\n<h2>Any errors\u00a0in the Experiment?<\/h2>\n<p>If someone re-visited the website, and hadn&#8217;t downloaded an eBook, they re-entered the campaign <em>at the beginning<\/em>. However, if they re-visited because they clicked through on a landing page ad &#8211; and were of the 50% that didn&#8217;t download the book on the spot &#8211; they were then re-entered into the campaign, but\u00a0<em>excluded<\/em> from seeing that\u00a0<em>specific\u00a0<\/em>ad again.<\/p>\n<p>I still don&#8217;t know how to prevent those who didn&#8217;t click any of the\u00a0ads, but\u00a0revisited the website, from re-entering the funnel at the beginning and seeing all the same ads again.<\/p>\n<h2>Final Word<\/h2>\n<p>Want to see these types of experiments first-hand?
