And we discovered that&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Although Facebook advertising can be very useful for general brand awareness, most of the time, we want to deepen the relationship with the prospect or customer by getting them to take action.<\/p>\n<p>To help with this, Facebook provides a range of call to action (CTA) buttons for ads and pages.<\/p>\n<p>There are approximately 20 different options, from the general \u201clearn more\u201d to more specific ones such as \u201cshop now\u201d for e-commerce, \u201csee menu\u201d for cafes and restaurants and even \u201cget showtimes\u201d for movie theatres.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-541169 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/university.adespresso.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Facebook-CTA-options.png\" sizes=\"(max-width: 408px) 100vw, 408px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/university.adespresso.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Facebook-CTA-options.png 408w, https:\/\/university.adespresso.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Facebook-CTA-options-191x300.png 191w, https:\/\/university.adespresso.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Facebook-CTA-options-64x100.png 64w\" alt=\"Facebook CTA availables\" width=\"408\" height=\"640\" \/><\/p>\n<p>What we wanted to discover is:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"list-custom\">\n<li><strong>Do CTA buttons help or hinder ad performance?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>How much difference does the selected option actually make?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Should we go for a soft option such as \u201clearn more\u201d or something more direct like \u201cdownload\u201d?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To take the guesswork out of advertising, we ran another AdEspresso $1,000 experiment to find out what really works when you put real ad dollars behind an A\/B test.<\/p>\n<h2>What\u2019s the Best CTA for Facebook Ads?<\/h2>\n<h4><strong><span class=\"marker\">Experiment Setup<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>We wanted to test four different CTA options:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"list-custom\">\n<li>\n<h5><strong>No button<\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5><strong>Learn more<\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5><strong>Download<\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5><strong>Signup<\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To make the test \u201cscientific\u201d and its results meaningful, we needed\u00a0to eliminate as many variables as possible. So we basically created one\u00a0single Facebook\u00a0ad and copied it four times, changing only the CTA button.<\/p>\n<h4><strong><span class=\"marker\">The other details of the campaign are:<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul class=\"list-custom points-list\">\n<li><strong>Budget:<br \/>\n<\/strong>Each ad was placed into a separate adset so that we could control the budget and each ad spent $250 over the course of 11 days. With four ads that resulted in a total campaign budget of $1,000. Lifetime budgeting was used.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bid strategy:<\/strong><br \/>\nLowest cost without cap<\/li>\n<li><strong>Placement:\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nMobile newsfeed<\/li>\n<li><strong>Audience:\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nUS 1% Lookalike based on a seed audience of leads.<br \/>\n<em>Current leads and website visitors in the last 180 days were excluded to prevent subscribers from seeing the ads.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Optimization:<\/strong><br \/>\nWe optimized for conversions based on a lead pixel placed on the thank you and\u00a0<strong>the lead pixel was fired.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The lead pixel was what we tracked for our cost per lead.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Best CTA for Facebook Ads &#8211; The Hypothesis<\/h2>\n<p>We weren\u2019t sure if the softer approach of Learn More or the more direct approach of Download\/Sign Up would work best, so we polled members of AdEspresso University.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Learn More came out just ahead of Download in the predictions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-541176\" Ads &#8211; The Results<\/h2>\n<p>We created a graph in AdEspresso to analyze the results.<\/p>\n<p>As we can see from the results table both the click-through rate (CTR), the cost per click (CPC) and class=\"marker\"><strong>The best call to action buttons got more clicks and also more conversions once clicked<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Best CTA for Facebook Ads &#8211;\u00a0Conclusions<\/h2>\n<p>The results prove it beyond any doubt:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Not having a CTA button can increase the cost per lead by nearly 2.5 times.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Any choice of CTA button worked better than having none at all.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why did \u201cdownload\u201d work best in this instance?<\/strong><br \/>\nIt\u2019s likely that the ad provided enough information for the user to make a decision and then \u201cdownload\u201d gave the indication that they just needed to click through for a quick and easy download.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cLearn more\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0could have conveyed to the user that they then need to read more which could be time-consuming.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cSign up\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0could make users think that they have to enter their credit card details or hand over lots of personal details in a complicated form.<\/p>\n<p>Finally,<strong>\u00a0NO Button<\/strong>\u00a0doesn\u2019t give any call to action and the post could be confused with a standard page post that might not contain an offsite link: it isn\u2019t clear that you can click on the image to be taken to the website.<\/p>\n<h2>Best CTA for Facebook Ads &#8211;\u00a0Final Thoughts<\/h2>\n<p>Perhaps you\u2019ve had a top graphic designer working on your images and have got a specialist copywriter to craft your ad text but your ads could still fail if you don\u2019t get the CTA button right.<\/p>\n<p>Every small detail on a Facebook ad can have a huge influence on the results so nothing should be overlooked.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"marker\"><strong>To be clear we\u2019re not saying \u201cdownload\u201d is always the best option to pick, it will depend on the offer, the stage of the funnel and how much information the user needs before making a decision.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>For example with e-commerce sometimes we see \u201cpurchase\u201d work best and other times \u201clearn more\u201d depending on how complex or well known the product is.<\/p>\n<h2>Takeaway Message: Test As Much As You Can!<\/h2>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t matter if you prioritize testing images or text first, but once you have them
